Junior and Youth Training

The aim of the training section is to introduce beginners to sailing and give them the skills and confidence to take part in regular club activities. We are a RYA recognised training centre and have equality and safeguarding policies in place. As a non-commercial centre, our courses are taught by qualified instructors who are enthusiastic volunteers (plus the occasional freelance) and want to increase participation in the sport of sailing.

Our training sessions run throughout the year with integration between our junior, youth and adult programmes, allowing all the family to take part! Beginners training will be conducted in the club boats, and we focus on the RYA classes: junior will use Optimists, youth in Topper. Whilst the juniors are training, we will encourage the parents to try sailing with an experienced member or assist either ashore or on the water.

The stage 1 weekend is mandatory for all sailors as it provides the foundations for a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

For stages 2+, the training programme runs approximately twice a month during Spring and Summer, with most students completing stage 2 or 3 in a season, depending on how many sessions they attend.

Subsequent to this, the students can move onto Race Coaching, which will hopefully lead onto regular participation either at club or national level with further training available via the RYA or class youth squads.

In between training, practice can take place on FUN sailing Saturdays and Thursday evenings - typically April to September. This is unstructured time (no need to book) and allows juniors/youths to practice the manoeuvres and techniques as learnt during training sessions, to build confidence and independence on the water, and most importantly, to get out there and have fun!
