Welcome to Crawley Mariners Yacht Club

Cobnor Weekends

These weekends are held at Cobnor Activity Centre at Chidham situated in beautiful Chichester Harbour. We sleep in a log cabin and usually use dinghies with room for an instructor and two or three students. We take along our own dinghies (usually RS Quests), which have spinnakers and trapezes fitted. We have comprehensive safety boat support with our own sea ribs plus an additional hired one from CAC if necessary; these are helmed by club members, who have safety-boat endorsements. We do need parents and instructors to tow boats, please volunteer if you have a towbar,

Aimed at young people between 13 and 19, although confident sailors of twelve do occasionally come along with a sailing/galley parent (it helps ensure we all get some sleep!) During the past few years we have offered spaces to adults - why shouldn’t they have some fun as well. This has improved their confidence and given them experience of tidal sailing. If you have not experienced a ‘Cobnor Weekend’ do give it a go. We have space for up to eighteen sailors (depending on gender ratios for the accommodation).

Arrival is Friday after 17.00, we have a meal and settle in and then try to get a good night’s sleep! Saturday we sail from 10.00 to 16.30 with food breaks and an excellent evening meal followed by some non educational games. Sunday we are up early again and sail until 13.30, have a late lunch, after which we clear up and clean the centre before going home at 16.30. Essentials for sailing: long wetsuit and spray top and wet weather trousers or drysuit; suntan lotion, fleece hat and gloves. We may be able to help people out with suitable wet weather gear if they do not have everything, just let us know. We all have to assist in duty rotas for cleaning/washing-up (not too onerous for a superb weekends sailing). We do ask  each of you to bring your favourite cake to share with everyone when we come in from sailing.

We do rely on enough of our wonderful Instructors and power boat drivers to volunteer to help run the weekends. GALLEY CREW: The food on these weekends is as much a highlight as the sailing and it is essential we have two people at least to organise the food from Friday evening through to Sunday lunch.

We cannot run these weekends without specific help in the Galley, however we do offer the option to sail one day and help on the other day. We do not do anything too fancy, just good wholesome food to fill hungry tummies, the children and instructors do the washing-up at the end of the meals. You may even have time for a lovely walk along the tow path or visit Emsworth craft loft. We do need one person in the galley to hold a Food Hygiene Level 2 Certificate; these are easily obtainable online and take about 45 mins to complete. The club will reimburse you the £25 cost.

Never sailed before or only just joined, no problem, an instructor is allocated to each boat so you can enjoy learning how to sail in this beautiful conservation area surrounded by land! There is bound to be someone else on their first visit and those who have been before will be quick to show you the ropes. It is also a good opportunity for those with RYA Stage 2 to start ticking off some items in Stage 3 and Stage 4.
