British Canoeing White Water Safety & Rescue (WWSR)   iCal entry for this event

As a specialist in safety and rescue, Chris Brain (www.chrisbraincoaching.com) will be running two British Canoeing White Water Safety & Rescue courses for the OCA - 7th & 8th March 2019 and 27th & 28th April 2019

The WWSR two day course is aimed at paddlers operating on moving water. The course is ideal for paddlers who are capable of paddling on Grade 2 water and have a little experience or knowledge of safety & rescue.

Course Aims

To improve individual’s awareness of safety skills in the river environment.

• To teach personal survival skills.

• To teach basic throw line rescue techniques.

• To understand the need for structure in an emergency situation

• To outline basic rescue protocols that prioritize the safety of the individual above all others.

• To introduce & develop the ‘clean rope’ principle

Prerequisites

Due to the paddling environment and the boat control required the candidate should be:

• Confident in their ability to paddle on grade 2 water.

• Be confident swimming in normal canoe clothing suitable for a moving water environment.

A first aid certificate is not a prerequisite; however the holding of a first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers.

Kit and Equipment

The WWSR course is very practical and does involve plenty of swimming and time spent in and around the water.  Please ensure that you are suitably dressed for this environment, with a dry suit and good shoes being highly recommended.  Please bring with you plenty of snacks that can be eaten at the side of the river and also a flask with a hot drink will be an excellent idea too.  We will be having lots of short breaks throughout the day and not stopping to buy lunch so please bring it with you.  You may also wish to bring a camera to take photos too.

All course participants will need to bring your usual paddling equipment and a canoe and also a paddle for the course.

If you own or have access to the following equipment it would ideal if you brought

• Throwline – Floating high visibility rope, minimum length 15m, minimum diameter 8mm.

• River Knife – sharp, safely stowed but easily accessible single-handed.

• Karabiners – Locking HMS pear shaped anodised alloy karabiners.

• An un-knotted 3 – 5m length of climbers tape webbing.

• Buoyancy aid with quick release chest harness

• Whistle

If you do not have access to any of the equipment detailed above then please do not worry, but let me know as early as possible please.
