Pre 1920 RNYC Racing Chart
Period: 0This is an original print from the early 1900s. A batch of these charts was produced to show the RNYC regatta courses. A bundle of unused prints ended up in the attic and were discovered when club documents were catalogued.
They are now being offered as a limited edition to help fund the club’s heritage activities.
The Royal Northern Yacht Club (RNYC) moved into its first clubhouse in Rothesay in 1878. From then until 1939 racing took place between Bute and the mainland. A large format chart from 1888 is the earliest version in the club’s archives. After that charts were included in the regatta programmes each year.
The courses shown on this chart were used from 1902 until 1910. The Big Class races were 45 miles long and other classes ranged from 15 to 30 miles.
The print is supplied in a quality mount ready for framing.

The 1920 chart shows a major change – creation of a separate racing area for smaller yachts (Course II) between the Kyles and Toward Castle.
There were further changes in 1923 and 1925.
The RNYC moved to Rhu in 1936. From 1946 the racing area moved up the Firth with regattas based at Hunters Quay and the Gareloch.
