The Salterns Sailing Club has five different sailing fleets for its members from beginners in Polyoppies to the our senior sailors in British Moths.

Ducklings Fleet

Ducklings is the perfect way to learn the basics of sailing under the careful guidance of dinghy instructors (when available). No previous sailing experience is required. We play lots of games to help build confidence, promote good techniques and give our newest sailors the best possible start.

Our regular slot is on Saturday mornings at 9am (TBC).

Please email our Ducklings Fleet Coordinator salternsducklings@gmail.com for more information.

Brass Fleet

You know the sailing basics and can tack and gybe in light winds. We will get you sailing well around a triangle and learning a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor.

We sail on Saturday mornings at 10am (TBC).

Please email our Brass Fleet Coordinator salternsbrassfleet@gmail.com for more information.

Bronze Fleet

Bronze Fleet sailors learn the basics of racing, and participants will sail in a GRP Optimist (not a plastic optimist) and should have achieved Red Pennant or RYA Level 2 or sail at an equivalent standard. We have a fleet of Club GRP Optimist to try out in the fleet, or you may bring your own - being part of Bronze Fleet also requires a commitment to help in the maintenance of the Club boats if you sail them!

We sail on Sunday mornings at 9am (TBC).

Please email our Bronze Fleet Coordinator bronzefleet@gmail.com for more information.

Tera Fleet

To be able to sail in the Tera Fleet you should have achieved Red Pennant, RYA Level 2 or sail at an equivalent standard.

We sail on Saturday mornings at 9am (TBC).

Please email our Tera Fleet Coordinator salternsteras@gmail.com for more information.

Moth Fleet

Moth Fleet is aimed at older and advanced sailors who must have complete RYA 2 and have sailed in Bronze or Tera Fleet for over a year, Bronze Fleet or Tera Fleet captains must be happy for sailors to join Moth Fleet.

We sail on Sunday afternoons from 2pm (not every week).

Please email our Moth Fleet Coordinator mothfleet@gmail.com for more information.

Officer of the Day Training

Salterns is run by its members. But we can only run events when we have adults on hand to volunteer and help out. A key task is acting as Officer of the Day (OOD) for organised events and you can help by attending Zoom OOD training, hosted by our RYA Principle and Chief Instructor Neil Wharmby. We expect all parents/guardians of children in training fleets to aim to complete OOD training, because without an appointed OOD, we cannot run the fleet training sessions that your children enjoy.

OOD Training: TBC (on Zoom)
