Commodore's Challenge - A Grand Cruise
Every year we have a Commodore’s Challenge. It provides an opportunity to raise money for the Club’s charity. In recent history the day has focused on a one-off race with rounders or something similar in the afternoon. I thought it would be fun to try something a little different this year.
We have been looking to gently encourage cruising this season, not least with the RYA Day Sailing Course and a full cruising programme. In keeping with this theme, I would like this year’s challenge to be for us to set a new Seafarers' record for the number of boats/members participating in a Club cruise. It is, of course, equally important that we have a massively enjoyable day.
In a slight change to the published programme, the Grand Cruise will be scheduled for the 6th August with Sunday 7th as the spare day. With HW Portsmouth at 14:45 BST, the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Wootton Creek (Fishbourne) will be an ideal destination.
Both Patrol Boats will join us to provide support and there will be plenty of more experienced ‘cruisers’ around to help out. The aim is to make the event open to as many members and as wide a variety of boats as possible. To set a new record we need more than 14 boats taking part. So please look at the plan below and put the date firmly in your diary.
There will be a charge of £2 which will be collected on the day to cover mooring fees and the tea & cake when we get back. The remainder will go to the current club charity, Skin Cancer Research Fund: SCaRF
The outline plan is:
1000 Meet at the Club for passage/safety briefing
1130 Depart
1300 Arrive and tie up at the RVYC pontoon or beach if necessary
1300-1430 Buy your own lunch at the Club
1430 Depart
1600 Return SSC
1630 Tea and cake
1800 Day complete
Those wishing to participate, please contact The Commodore by email: philip.warwick001@btinternet.com, or put your name down on the list in the club or here on WebCollect.
Please help make this an enjoyable and memorable day.
