Optimist Club 2018
Welcome to the Optimist Club sign-up page.
We teach in a fun, safe environment helped by qualified Instructors and sailing parents. Everyone is a volunteer and it's important Mum, Dad or responsible adult stays at the club.
For those new to sailing the club runs a "Beginners" group or for the more experienced sailors we run a club each week focusing on developing sailing and racing skills and progressing through the IOCA scheme.
Oppy Beginners
New starters should plan on at least 4 sessions to get up to level 1 and by then you will know how far you would like to go. We allow a temporary membership for non club members to join, however to progress on-wards you have to join the club, the Senior instructor will be able to advise on options and we can offer some attractive deals for non-members who complete IOCA level 1. The club provides the use of a dinghy, safety helmet and buoyancy aid; however the sailors will need clothing suitable for the conditions. All sessions are run by qualified RYA instructors.
Optimist Intermediates
Open to Weir Wood club members to sail their own Optimist dinghy's under supervision and coaching of the Optimist club parents team and instructors. These sessions cost £5 per week to cover the fuel costs of the additional safety boats deployed.
The club has a small fleet of Optimists for use by club members. The boats are intended to bridge the gap until members can obtain their own boats. Accordingly priority will be given to those who have recently completed beginners’ sessions at Weir Wood. Boats are only available for use during normal Oppy Club operating times and a nominal charge of £20.00 per session per boat will be levied to help cover maintenance costs and include the £5 club session cost levied on all members.
Weir wood Sailing Club is committed to safeguarding children taking part in its activities and has written policies and procedures for instructors and parents, which can be found here |
