Long Barn is an ancient house believed to date back to at least 1360. In 1915 Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson bought the house on their return from Constantinople. They lived there between 1915 and 1932.Almost immediately they started creating the three-acre garden. Much of the garden remains original and today it is lovingly curated by the current owners, Lars & Rebecca Lemonius. In 1930, Vita and Harold bought Sissinghurst Castle and in 1932 permanently moved there and created one of the most famous gardens in the world. They eventually sold Long Barn in 1945.
Our visit to Long Barn Gardens will start at 11.00 am with tea and a 20-minute talk followed by free time to wander around the spectacular gardens well informed of what to look for and enjoy. The gardens are terraced and many of the paths and steps are original and therefore uneven.
Our visit will end by 1.00 pm when we travel to the George & Dragon Pub in Speldhurst TN3 0NN for a sandwich and chips lunch (drinks not included.) Parking should be available.
At 2.30 pm we will cross the road to St. Mary The Virgin Church, where we shall have a presentation and tour of the ten stained glass windows from an extraordinary collaboration of William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. Our day should end by 4.00pm. Unfortunately, the church cannot offer tea and coffee but refreshment is available at the pub, or the Dragon Fly Farm and café shop in the village.
