Zoom Lecture “Christopher Whall: the Dorking Years" 25 February 2026
“Christopher Whall, Arts and Crafts stained-glass artist: the Dorking Years”
Wednesday 25th February 2026
at 7.30 pm
A lecture by Anne Anderson
The son of a country rector, Whall embarked on an artistic career against his father's wishes but, rather than pursuing painting he became interested in stained glass, which brought him into contact with leading players in the Arts and Crafts Movement. Architects John Dando Sedding and William Lethaby offered him important commissions. Marrying Florence Chaplin in 1884, the couple settled at Ada Cottage, Stonebridge, near Dorking, where their five children were born, including Veronica who followed in her father's footsteps. Whall established both a smallholding and a workshop at Ada Cottage. He wanted to make his windows as well as designing them. He made his first important independent windows for St Mary's Stamford (1891-93). In 1896, due to the pressure of work, Whall moved to Chiswick. Nevertheless, during his years in Stonebridge he established his reputation as a leading A&C stained glass designer and maker.
