 Zoom Lecture

Thursday 7 March  2024 at 7.30 pm

A Lecture by Dr Lucy Ella Rose

In Memory of Desna Greenhow

To commemorate International Women’s Day 2024, this talk will explore women’s role in the Arts and Crafts Movement, supporting the women’s suffrage campaign that gathered momentum in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. By exploring works - from banners designed by Mary Watts and Mary Lowndes, to jewellery designed by Ernestine Mills and Sylvia Pankhurst - this talk shows how women created striking symbols and colourways with an awareness of their powerful political potential. This talk highlights the suffragist contributions of local Surrey women artists such as Gertrude Jekyll and the Brackenbury sisters and Surrey as being the heart of suffrage activity.

Dr Lucy Ella Rose is a Lecturer in Surrey University specialising in Nineteenth century creative partnerships; women’s writings: Victorian visual culture; feminisms and women’s suffrage. In 2019 she published Suffragist Artists in Partnership: Gender, Word and Image.
