Zoom Lecture - West End Shopping Wednesday 22 February 2023
“A Shopping Trip to the West End in the time of William Morris”
a Lecture by Carolyn Smith
Wednesday, 22nd February 2023 at 7.30 pm
In 1870s London, Morris & Co was one of the most fashionable shops in the West End for interior design. Morris wallpapers were beginning to adorn the walls of houses throughout the country. Carolyn Smith will examine how the shop started and some of the items on sale that you might have wanted to buy. This wide ranging lecture will give an impression of the whole shopping experience. What would it have been like to visit Oxford Street and where might you have gone next if you liked Arts and Crafts?
Carolyn Smith, Chairman of The Arts and Crafts Movement in Surrey, read history at University College London, specialising in architectural history. She has a particular interest in social and garden history.
