The Unshod Trim - Apprentice/ATF Day
Saturday 6th March at The Horse Trust, Princes Risborough
With EPA Examiner Robert Shave FWCF and Nicky Housby-Skeggs, Veterinary Director at The Horse Trust
Designed specifically for third and fourth-year farriery apprentices, this practical course offers a valuable opportunity to develop and refine unshod trimming skills on a live horse, building confidence and preparing for the unshod trim element of the End-Point Assessment (EPA).
Led by experienced industry professionals, the day will combine hands-on practical experience with expert guidance to help apprentices understand the standards required for a successful assessment.
Nicky Housby-Skeggs will lead small-group sessions focused on live horse observation, covering key points of the horse, conformation, and the identification of common ailments and conditions. She will also explore foot-related X-rays, explaining how to interpret them and apply this knowledge to the assessment of the horse.
ATFs are strongly encouraged to attend alongside their apprentices. The day provides an opportunity to observe the practical element of the assessment, gain a clearer understanding of the expected standards, and discuss how best to support apprentices in preparing for and successfully completing this part of their EPA.
