Junior Race Days 2019 - Chew Crew Plus
New for this summer, as an extension to Chew Crew, are Junior Race Days, running approximately monthly. Aimed at those in the Intermediate group and above, or with equivalent experience, whether they are signed up or not to Chew Crew Intermediate program, who want to improve their sailing and to try out some racing. The goal is to improve sailing skills, while having fun, and trying to make the boats go faster! We will likely have multiple coaches for each session so we can cater for those that are brand new to trying racing, and those that may already have done a number of races and are looking to refine their technique.
It is a full day program with coaching provided by RYA Junior Race Coaches or Dinghy Instructors with experience in the junior classes. The coaches and instructors will be supported by our Assistant Dinghy Instructors (ADI), many of whom are our current group of junior and youth racers.
The morning session will be a mix of on the water coaching, and a small amount of theory and land drills. In the
afternoon it will be coached racing. For those that need it, ADIs will be on board with them, and for others the coaches will be in RIBs following the racing and giving encouragement or sharing coaching tips as the boats race round the course.
The 4 sessions will cover:
- Basics of sailing a windward/leeward course using the 5 essentials to sail around the course even better
- Basic sailing rules and introduction to starting
- Boat handling (improving tacks and gybes) and mark rounding
- Sail shapes and using the controls to change it
- Basics in tactics and strategy
All junior classes will be very welcome to attend – Optimists, Teras, Toppers, Mirrors and Fevas. Club boats can be used as well. Sailors can try different boats at each session.
There will of course be daily prizes, series prizes, spot prizes, plenty of fun and laughter and if we're lucky some super star coaches!
There is a charge for each session, as a number of the coaches will be external RYA qualified coaches brought in to specifically coach and instruct this session. You will need to register for each session (tip: if you register all in one go you only need fill the form in once!). Cost is £15 per session, with a £5 discount for those that are registered with Chew Crew for the summer (make sure you select the correct ticket).
