Beginner and Improvers sea kayak   iCal entry for this event

This course is offered for a mixed range of abilities, and there will be several coaches.  On the first evening paddlers will be allocated by the coaches to the appropriate course of beginners or Improvers.

The course runs for 5 weeks on Tuesday evenings. Aimed at those who would like to acquire sea kayak specific skills.

The beginners course includes:

  • Choosing a sea kayak and how to make it comfortable
  • Forwards paddling
  • Going sideways
  • Capsize practice
  • How to use a spraydeck and exit safely

The Improvers course skills that will be taught are

  • How to choose the best sea kayak for you, and how to operate it, e.g., foot pegs, skegs
  • Efficient forward paddling, paddling in the wind
  • Manoeuvring the sea kayak, turning, edging, brace strokes
  • Towing
  • Rescues (we will choose warm weather but you will definitely get wet)
  • Theory: trip planning, weather, navigation, safety kit, loading sea kayaks on vehicles

Please sign up for this course if you would subsequently like to do the Sea Kayak Award Basic Skills, as the Improvers course provide the essential foundation.  After doing an Improvers course you are advised to do a set of sea kayak weekly touring paddles before signing up for the Sea Kayak Award Basic Skills course so that you increase your paddling fitness and have the opportunity to practise the skills you learned on the Improvers course.

Minimum number of 4 people for course to run.
