RYA Adult Level 1 & 2 Start Sailing and Basic Skills
The Level 1 and 2 courses will teach you the very basic skills of learning to sail.
- Membership is required to attend our courses. Please ensure that you have purchased or already have the appropriate membership for the course. If you are unsure then please contact the Office.
- Dinghy sailing is a very active sport. At times it may feel like a gym workout. For example, you will need to be able to repeatedly squat quite low to move under the sail. If you feel that fitness or agility may be a barrier to learning or have any concerns, please speak to the office before you book. We can discuss the options that may be available for you.
On these courses, you will learn how to tack, gybe, sail around a triangle and carry out a range of seamanship manoeuvres. You will also learn how to capsize and how to right a capsized boat. You will need to bring a wetsuit and wetsuit boots and be prepared to get wet!
The single-handed course is delivered in small, single-handed dinghies with one participant per boat. The instructor will teach from a powerboat. These sailing boats require a good level of fitness and agility. The photo shows a Pico sailing boat which we use.
The double-handed course is delivered in doubled-handed dinghies with two or three participants and an instructor in the boat. These sailing boats require a level of fitness and agility. The photo shows an example of the doubled-handed sailing boats that we use.
This five day intensive option follows the same syllabus as the two-day Level 1 & 2 courses and with additional time with an instructor to develop your skills.
On successful completion of this course, you will be able to hire the club boats or join our Saturday club coaching session to gain more experience.
