America's Dance Revolution: 1876-1900

Racket, York, Newport, Knickerbocker...after the USA celebrated its centennial in 1876, newly organized and confident American dancing masters began creating distinctly American variations on the standard 19th century dance repertoire. This weekend workshop will cover a mix of notable American couple dances, unusual quadrilles, and lively country dances from the last quarter of the 19th century. Special attention will be given to understanding the commonalities in technique among different dances and developing solid fundamentals.
Classes will be accessible to both beginner and experienced dancers.
Susan de Guardiola
is an internationally recognized expert on nineteenth-century social dance with a quarter-century of experience in historical dance teaching, research, and reconstruction. A master teacher with a keen interest in the evolution of dance in Europe and America and an unmatched understanding of couple dance techniques, she has developed innovative teaching practices to make the 19th century repertoire more accessible. And as a caller and ball preceptor, she is experienced in guiding dancers of all levels in both graceful and joyful performance of group dances both simple and intricate. She looks forward to sharing some of America’s earliest contributions to historical dance!

10.30 to 17.30 workshop with one hour break for lunch.
Changing rooms available. Dance shoes or similar footwear advisable (no stilettos or white-soled shoes!)
Water only in studio.
The Sadlers Wells Stage Door Café will be open on Saturday. On Sunday we can use the space to eat in. You are welcome to bring your own food and refreshments both days. A choice of shops and cafes can be found near the Angel Islington.
