Subscriptions

There is a range of subscription types from which to select.
Standard membership includes on-line access to the peer-reviewed journal Historical Metallurgy and the news magazine, The Crucible, each published twice a year. The Crucible is not peer reviewed.
Concessionary members are persons under 18 years or over 65 years of age, and pay a reduced annual subscription fee. They have full access to on-line publications and may include hard copy publications in their subscription at extra cost.
Students are people of any age who are bona fide students to the satisfaction of the HMS Council. They pay the same subscription rates as concessionary members, have full access to on-line publications and may include hard copy publications in their subscription at extra cost.
A patron is a member who pays extra to support the Open Access project. This project provides a fully accessible on-line publication platform without charge to authors. Patron membership automatically includes hard-copy newsletter and journal.
HMS believes research should be free to write about and free to read and the subscriptions contribute to supporting this. It supports high quality publications with full colour images in both the journal and The Crucible.
Where a member opts to receive hard copy of either the journal or the newsletter, or both, the subscription includes a contribution towards the cost of printing and postage. In view of the bank charges incurred for money transfers, a three-year subscription rate is available at three times the annual rate.
Anyone making tax payments to the UK Revenue & Customs (HMRC) can claim 25% of the net value of subscriptions and donations purchased and gift the amount to the Historical Metallurgy Society (at no personal cost). HMS claims it back from HMRC. There is an option for doing this.
