Welcome to Lanarkshire Beekeepers
Home >

Beekeeping is a wonderful hobby. It takes you outdoors, gets you up close to nature, challenges your little grey cells, and helps you meet like-minded people and make new friendships. However that said, knowing where to start with your beekeeping adventure can be quite daunting.
Every January, our in-house expert, Julian, hosts the Lanarkshire Beekeepers Absolute Beginner Course In Beekeeping, providing you with the necessary knowledge to commence your beekeeping adventure.
To register for this course, please access the following link: Lanarkshire Beekeepers: ABC Course (webcollect.org.uk)
The Sessions:
The course constitues six evening sessions to cover the basics of beekeeping. There's nothing like 'hands on' though, and so we'll be supplementing the online talks with some Saturday workshops at Bothwell Community Garden. That'll give you lots of time for trying on different beesuits, lighting smokers, building frames, drinking tea, eating cake, and talking about bees of course!
Exams:
There is no exam at the end of this course, although we hope that if you go on to keep bees you will apply for the SBA Basic Beekeeping Certificate after a year or so.
Equipment:
Please don't buy any equipment yet! There's a bewildering amount of stuff available and you'll make better choices when you've completed your beekeeping course.
Zoom with us:
All six sessions will be held online will be via Zoom. If you are unfamiliar with Zoom you'll find a few tutorials on YouTube to help.
Local support:
Your course fee includes full membership of Lanarkshire Beekeepers for the year. Once you have signed up you are free to attend any and all of our club activities. If you are outwith our area we recommend that you also join your nearest local association. When the course comes to an end the local associations will support you with mentoring and sourcing colonies of locally raised honey bees. Local bees are always best and you'll hear more about that in the ABC.
So we're all set.
