RYA First Aid Course

Llyn Brenig Sailing Club

Saturday 3 Oct 2026: 1000 - 1700

The RYA First Aid Course has been specifically developed for those participating in, or supporting, water sports.

The one-day classroom course is taught by instructors with considerable boating/sailing experience. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross-channel passages.

Topics include:

  1. The recovery position in a confined space
  2. CPR combined with drowning protocol
  3. Bleeding
  4. Head injuries
  5. Cold water shock and hypothermia
  6. Seasickness and dehydration
  7. First aid kits
  8. Requesting medical advice or assistance by VHF/marine radio
  9. Helicopter rescue

Some First Aid knowledge is particularly important for safety/patrol boat crew members - it can be very difficult for just one person to navigate, helm, call for help and resuscitate at the same time!

However, ideally everyone should do the course, whether out on the water or supporting from the shore.

Minimum age of 12 years is being applied.

The course is MCA approved and satisfies the requirements for Coastal Skipper Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence and some commercial work afloat.

It is also mandatory for all those wishing to undertake duties as a sailing instructor under the RYA's National Sailing Scheme.
