2026 Adult Start Sailing Course B
Adult RYA Levels 1 & 2 - Start Sailing , Basic skills Plus
In order to take part in the courses you must be a sailing member of Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club.

Learn to sail by enrolling on one of our very popular Learn to Sail courses. You will be taught using the Royal Yachting Associations tried and tested methods by our fully qualified instructors. By the end of the course you will be able to sail a dinghy around a triangular course even if you have never set foot in a boat before. The 'Plus' part signifies that the course includes a couple of evening improver sessions and an optional supported Wednesday night race. All in the same group so you will will be amongst the same group of people you have learnt with.

This course, which mixes on-line theory sessions with lots of on-water sessions runs over the following times and it is necessary for you to attend each session unless agreed beforehand with the Chief Instructor (Details below)
2026 Course Format
Introduction online Zoom Thursday 14th May 7:15pm
Courses will run each day from 10am to 4:30pm on the following dates:
Tuesday 26th May to Friday 29th May inclusive.
Follow on Improver Sessions will be on Sunday 7th and Saturday 13th June
We provide buoyancy aids etc. but you should ensure you bring along..... .
- Clothing to sail in, ideally wetsuit (Particularly if participating in one of the early season sessions)
- Towel
- Full change of cloths
- Appropriate footwear e.g.trainers that you are happy to become wet
- Windproof top e.g.cagoule
- Hat
- This will be discussed during the introduction zoom meeting along with recommendations for where to buy equipment, we recommend not buying any equipment prior to the introduction session.
Remember it can be much cooler on the water - many thin layers are warmer than 1 thick jumper. Denim jeans are very heavy when wet - lighter trackies or cotton trousers are much better.
Following completion of this course the club has many opportunities for 'novice' sailors to improve their sailing skills most of which are offered free of charge. Just chat to your instructor or check our website for details.

- On successful completion of your course your name, certificate number and date of issue will be stored for up to10 years. This information allows us to verify or replace your certificate if required.
Catering
- Unless otherwise advised catering is not provided so please arrange to bring your own food. Hot Water and Microwave are available for your use.

Training Centre Information
The centre is Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club located at Green Lane, Lowton, Warrington. WA3 1BQ
The operating area is Pennington Flash
Courses leading to recognised RYA qualifications will be run by formally qualified instructors or coaches and the course fee will include any required course material i.e. publications, certificates.
Teaching ratios will not exceed….
- Single handed dinghies 6:1
- Crewed dinghies 3:1 for beginners with instructor aboard
- Maximum 9:1 but not more than 6 boats per instructor (e.g. 3 Xenons with 3 students in each, or 4 Picos with 2 students in each).
