European Containers for the 2025 World Championships in Australia
The Australian Musto Skiff Class Association has been busy planning the ACO Musto Skiff World Championships 2025 which will be hosted by Woollahra Sailing Club between the 2nd and 10th January 2025. The racing area will be in the iconic waters of Sydney Harbour.
In tandem the International Committee has been investigating the options for transporting boats by container from Europe to Sydney for the event. To be able to move these plans forward, the Committee needs to know how many boats from Europe will be going to the event and therefore need sailors to commit to the event before the 27th July 2024 to guarantee their boat's place in a container!
Below is the information as it stands at the moment:
Cost
The committee has been speaking with a leading marine shipping company and we currently estimate the cost to be in the order of £750 per boat for the return trip. This is based on:
- 40ft containers filled with 14 Musto Skiffs per container.
- Containers loaded in a south coast UK location.
- Containers loaded in early October 2024 for delivery to Woollahra Sailing Club before Christmas.
- Containers return to the UK in late March or April 2025.
- Containers are loaded and unloaded by the sailors.
- Shipping routes do not use the Suez Canal and go via the Cape of Good Hope.
- Inclusive of Carnet fees and shipping insurance.
As an added incentive, if you pay your container deposit before the 27th July 2024 you will receive a £100 discount on the final shipping cost.
Variables
The cost above is, as stated, an estimate. The cost cannot be fixed until 30 days prior to each journey and is subject to a number of variables which include (but are not limited to):
- The number of boats - The overarching cost is per container regardless of how many boats are in them. If containers are only part filled then the cost per boat will increase. Once the Committee know the number of boats, we can look at the most efficient container numbers and sizes. We can also coordinate with European based B14s who are sharing the event with us as we did in Garda last year.
- Loading location - The current assumption is loading the containers at a south coast UK location (probably in the Southampton area). If there is sufficient demand it may be feasible to offer other locations elsewhere in the UK and/or in continental Europe but this cannot be confirmed without sailors first committing to the event. Road haulage to the relevant port will have a cost.
- World Events - Fuel prices, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and many more factors outside of our control can effect shipping costs (both up and down).
- Taxes and Fees - The cost includes taxes and fees as they are at the moment, but these could change (both up and down).
What You Need to do Now
Please book your container space by the 27th July 2024! Places are on a first come basis so the sooner the better to guarantee your boat place. To do this we are asking for a £350 deposit. The balance will be payable in stages as costs become fixed. The deposit is non-refundable, unless the event does not go ahead, or at the sole discretion of the organising committee, in which case refunds will be given minus any costs that cannot be avoided.

Packing Instructions
Detailed packing instructions will be provided closer to the container loading date, but just a note of caution to make sure that anything shipped is clean, dry and kept to a minimum as everything will need to be itemised in the Carnet and Australian Customs are very particular about this to reduce biosecurity risks in Australia. Any fines incurred will be added to the overall cost and shared amongst all the sailors. More information on importing items into Australia can be found here:
