General Information: Our summer Cadet Weeks are a popular 5 day course run by RYA certified instructors. Our training focuses on learning and having fun on the water, and many of the groups work towards RYA accredited qualifications. There are nine different groups to choose from. Due to high demand, you must be an NBYC Member to book and attend this course.
Adults on Site: Children aged 8 and over are not required to have a guardian on site during the course, however you will be required to sign your child in/out each day. If you are not able to collect your child we will ask you to nominate who will be collecting them in loco parentis.
Children aged 7 and under do require a guardian on site (or somebody nominated as a guardian in loco parentis) for the duration of the course. Should you have any queries, please contact us to discuss this.
Photographs: We sometimes have a photographer taking pictures of activities during the week. We ask you to opt in to photo permissions while on site here at NBYC. This is completed during the booking process. Please feel free to contact training@nbyc.co.uk if you have any questions.
THERE IS A USEFUL GUIDE ATTACHED WITH BOOKING TIPS AND COURSE ADVICE FOR PARENTS. PLEASE OPEN IT AND HAVE A READ BEFORE BOOKING AS IT CONTAINS ESSENTIAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSES TAKING PLACE.
PLEASE NOTE - If the stage you need is full, please select 'waiting list' and fill the online form out. There is no payment required to put your name on the waiting list. We hope to provide a space for all children but we do have to follow RYA ratios per group. Thank you for your understanding.
PLEASE DO NOT BOOK ONTO BOTH TRAINING WEEKS UNLESS YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR CHILD TO ATTEND BOTH WEEKS - Please also note, it is not guaranteed your child will pass their stage in just one week, so please do not book on to the next stage up the following week without speaking to one of our training team.

Boat hire is charged at £75 per boat for the duration of the course - there are limited numbers so please book now to avoid disappointment. For topper hire, a security deposit of £50 is required on the first day of the course (a cash deposit is preferable). Please see the Office first thing on the Monday of your course to arrange this. Your deposit will be returned to you on the Friday upon safe return of the topper.
Please note, you are welcome to use your own boat, Optimist, Toppers and RS Fevas are the recommended classes. If you would like to sail a boat that is not an oppie or topper, please contact training@nbyc.co.uk to organise this with our training team.
If you wish to sail a Laser, please also contact our training team to discuss this. Please note that we will not allow Lasers with full rigs on our youth and junior training courses.
For stage 4 and performance sailing boats will be provided by NBYC (there is no need to hire a boat or bring your own). We are not able to provide boats for Spinnakers and Anchors.
Course Options: Please see our full course information sheet for course options and more information.
For children aged 7 years please book on to Water Rats. For those with little or no sailing experience 8 years and over we suggest starting at Stage 1. Many children complete Stage 1 more than once so that they can cement their knowledge and build their water confidence before moving on. If your sailor has left a long gap in their sail training, we would recommend either returning to Stage 1, or a stage lower than that which they previously completed. Don’t worry – we make assessments throughout the week and will endeavour to move your sailor if we feel they are not in the right group. If your child has got a lot of previous experience but no formal RYA qualifications, please contact the office to discuss their requirements. We may look to organise a 1-2-1 session for them to assess which group would be most appropriate for their skill level.
Food: Why not take the stress out of the food preparation and pre-order your sailor's lunch for the week, meals consist of a hot meal (with vegetarian option) and a glass of squash. Food costs £43 for juniors for the week. Bookings for additional food orders will open several weeks before the course.
If you do not want to sign up for the weeks meals you will still be able to buy individual meals on the day, payable by cash or bank card at the Hatch. Please note that these will be subject to availability. If your child would prefer to bring their own packed lunch they are very welcome to do so. *IMPORTANT* WE ARE A NUT FREE WEEK, please do not pack any lunch/snacks that contain nuts.
