RYA Powerboat Level 2. September 2026   iCal entry for this event

RYA Powerboat Level 1 & 2 Course 2026 Saturday 12th and 19th September

This course is an introduction to Powerboating and is suitable for both the complete beginner and those with some experience who wish to obtain their formal RYA Powerboat Certificate which is increasingly required by insurance

The course is predominantly practical with a very small amount of theory and is delivered over 2 days by RYA registered Instructors We use the Club's high speed planing hull 'RIBs' (Rigid Inflatable Boat) with have wheel steered outboard engines operating out of Newhaven Marina and onto the sea in Seaford Bay. We also encourage students to gain familiarity on the course with using tiller steered outboards and this takes place on our lake at Piddinghoe. There will also be the opportunity to experience driving our displacement boat ARK from Newhaven Marina.

At the end of the course, the student will have confidence in the basic, safe handling of powerboats in familiar waters during daylight.

Club members are offered a substantial discount on the standard price on the understanding that they subsequently give their time to the Club undertaking Event Support Duties and receive instruction on laying and retrieving race marks together with basic rescue techniques.

The training includes theory and background information on types of craft and engines, safety on the water, weather forecasts, tides and their effects, collision regulations, chartwork, use of compass and GPS, launching and recovery to a trailer, recovering a man overboard, anchoring and much more.

Students will have an ongoing assessment, and if successful, an RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate will be awarded. If it is recognised that further training or practice after the course is required to achieve the necessary standard of confident handling of a boat, an action plan will be agreed.

he cost includes the RYA book Start Powerboating (G48), the RYA Syllabus and Logbook (G20), and the RYA Powerboat 2 Certificate.
