Scything is an excellent way of managing land in an environmentally positive way. Learn why you may wish to include this technique as a part of your meadow management. Understand the history and the benefits of this ancient technique of mowing.

Introduction to scything, using the Austrian scythe, will guide you through everything you need to know to get started. Learn about the components of the scythe, set up to fit the individual, demonstration of mowing and correct techniques for efficiency. Blade management honing (sharpening) and peening the technique of hammering the blade to improve strength and quality. The trainer will guide you on scything etiquette and essential safety whilst working with the blade. 

Please note the training will largely be theoretical and learning by demonstration, getting you ready for the next steps on your scything journey to purchase your own equipment. Whilst there may be a chance of some hands on mowing and sharpening this won’t be the main focus. 

Weather appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear are required. The group will stop for a half time break, please bring your own lunch. If you have your own scythe, please bring it along.
