River Medway Weekend 11 - 13 July   iCal entry for this event

Our next flat-water/family friendly paddling weekend will be on the Medway, doing the classic touring weekend from Tonbridge to Allington Lock.

We'll be camping at the Marlins site at Yalding on the banks of the river Friday and Saturday nights, and paddling the river down to the camp site from Tonbridge, and from the campsite to Allington Lock.

The Marlin's site is gentle wild camping. It offers little but a secluded spot right next to the river. However nearby is a pub; Environment Agency operated showers and loos (£1 a go); and free 24 hour toilets (3 minutes walk away).

The paddles will be flat-water with some locks and canoe chutes to be paddled or portaged, so this weekend is suitable for all our paddlers. Families with children are welcome. Dan and Sarah will be your leaders for the weekend.

Please note:

  1. You will need a waterways licence (covered by Paddle UK membership) for this trip.
  2. Parking costs are not included and may need to be paid
  3. We cannot support vans or car camping on this site. Smaller tents only please.
  4. Parking Friday and Saturday nights will be on the roadside, 3 minutes walk from the campsite - canoe locks (for securing boats to car roofs) would be useful on Friday night.

If the event is fully booked, please message events@opencanoe.info to be added to the waiting list.

further info

Over the two days we will paddle from Tonbridge to Yalding (about 7 miles )and Yalding to Allington (about 11 miles (Looking at the guide linked to in the booking page). There should be no need to carry in and put camping gear in boats.

We’ll be camping Friday and Saturday night at the Marlin site at Yalding. The leaders will decide closer to the event with section is paddled on which day.Plans might change on Friday night based on weather and other factors.

OCA is a leave no trace organisation so all paddlers would need to use cooking set ups that operate off the ground and cause no scorching. If dry weather means we need to tighten these rules we will let participants know.

We have no information on the rules of dogs on the camp site. We will check in on this.
