OPERA Online Only Presentation – Introduction to Fusion: Physics, Technology, and Risk   iCal entry for this event

THIS IS AN ONLINE ONLY EVENT - Invite link will be sent to all registered attendees nearer to the time of the presentation itself after bookings have closed.

Speaker:

Everett Hansen, Marsh Specialty - Energy & Power

Presentation Synopsis:

For many fusion may still be more science fiction than science, but material, grid-scale fusion power generation will soon become a reality. With over 40 fusion companies globally - including some with aims to commercialize prior to the end of the decade - construction projects are already underway and fusion risks need to be addressed.

Everett's presentation will cover the basics of the fusion reaction, discuss the leading technological approaches to commercial fusion power generation, and provide engineering and underwriting considerations for fusion projects.

The fusion risk profile is inherently distinct from the fission risk profile associated with legacy nuclear power generation and nuclear insurance risk transfer. Everett will contrast these profiles by providing an overview of global nuclear regulatory and risk paradigms and challenge that conventional, non-nuclear treatment of fusion power risk is not only appropriate, but necessary in order to support the development of the industry and commercialization of the technology.

Speaker Bio:

Everett Hansen is the Leader of the Fusion Center of Excellence within the Energy & Power Specialty Practice at Marsh US. Prior to Marsh, Everett served as a nuclear Submarine Officer in the U.S. Navy. He is a qualified Naval Nuclear Engineer by the U.S. Department of Energy and holds a B.S. in Physics from the United States Naval Academy and a M.S. in Systems Engineering from Florida State University.
