Summary:
Insured value is fundamental to an insurance policy and yet it can be a subject that doesn’t always get the focus it deserves. Most energy policies will cover damaged assets on a reconstruction new basis (RCN) but it is not uncommon to find that declared values for those assets do not fairly reflect their true current day value. Similar comments may also be applied to business interruption values (BI), which feature in many energy policies. As with asset values, insurers are often left wondering how reliable the client declarations of BI are and when incidents occur it is not unusual to be very surprised at the magnitude of subsequent BI claims
The “Valuation Matters” presentation will review the importance of valuation to insurers and highlight some of the reasons why declared values may become unrepresentative over time. Some examples of asset values and where to look for information will be included, as well as how to develop and use valuation benchmarks. The presentation will also discuss some aspects on BI values, including how to approach independent checks and where to find information.
