Welcome to Regional Furniture Society
Founded in 1984, the Regional F[member_nam[member_name]e][member_name]urniture Society promotes the study of all types of vernacular furniture in the British Isles from Windsor chairs, West Yorkshire panel-back armchairs, Lake District press cupboards and West Country stained chests to Welsh and Irish stick-back chairs and Scottish caquetoire chairs. It is concerned with their diverse forms, timber, construction and decoration, their makers and users (domestic and institutional), and their regional economic and social contexts. The influence of British furniture abroad, and of foreign makers and styles on British furniture is also a key interest.
We publish an internationally recognised journal, Regional Furniture, and two newsletters annually. Our website includes the latest news of events of interest to members, access to past journal articles and a lively instagram and twitter feed. We organize study days, visits to furniture collections throughout the UK, an annual conference and foreign tours. Bursaries and grants are available to support research.
