Navigation Courses

The next Day skipper and Yachtmaster theory courses will commence from February 2nd 2027.

The Day Skipper course will run from Tuesday 2nd February 2027 from 18:30 to 21:30 on Tuesday evenings for 8 weeks. It will include 2 Saturdays 6th and 20th March between 09:30 and 17:30 on each day.

The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster course will run from Wednesday 3rd February 2027 from 18:30 to 21:30 on Wednesday evenings for 8 weeks. It will include 2 Sundays 7^th and 21^st March between 09.30 to 17.30.

The cost of the course is £500. 

Members receive a 10% discount.

The Course Fee – £500 for either Day Skipper or Yachtmaster includes All RYA Course Materials, Training Almanac, printing where necessary and Examination Fees.

RYA Day- Skipper

Course details: A comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers. This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

Course topics include: The basics of seamanship, the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage, chartwork, electronic charts, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting and meteorology, tides, collision regulations, construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat, emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and life rafts.

There are two exam papers.

RYA Yacht Master 

The Yacht Master Theory course is the next course on from the Day Skipper theory course. It goes into a lot more detail to that which is covered in the Day Skipper theory course.

The course is an advanced course in navigation techniques.

The syllabus makes some provision for the revision of subjects covered on the Day Skipper Course but those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the Day Skipper Course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available.
