Club Paddle River Esk (Whitby to Ruswarp)
A short spring paddle to welcome in "British Summer Time". We will paddle from Whitby Harbour at 1pm upstream with the rising tide. We will paddle up river through the peaceful valley to the shallow water beneath the two bridges at Ruswarp where open canoes can practice poling.
The weir at Ruswarp provides an opportunity to practice break ins and break outs (Eddy Turns) and potentially option for running the chute. We will have a break/snacks at the island under the railway bridge or on the weir at Ruswarp, before the return following the slack water after high tide downstream. Sailing opportunities arise with a southerly or westerly breeze as do limbo dancing moves under the viaduct’s pillars!
On reaching Whitby harbour, if time and conditions allow, we can extend the trip for a further 2 Kms to go under the swing bridge and have a brief visit to Tate Hill Sands, the small beach in the outer harbour, before returning to the put in.
If river levels are above normal on the day, an alternative paddle plan may be offered at Wykeham Lake or other venue.
