Fridays - Paddlesport - Introduction Course (IP2)
The aim of this three-week course is to introduce you to a fun new hobby paddling on the local river Axe and estuary. During this course you will progress towards achieving the Paddle UK Start Award.
What is the Start Award?
The Start Award is a place to start your paddling journey. If you’re brand new to the sport and really want to learn the basics to get started, then this is the award for you. You’ll cover everything from getting in and out of the boat, what you need to wear and paddling forward.
Who is it for?
Pretty much anyone of any age who wants to learn how to get started on the water. You don’t need any previous experience to take your Start Award, just the desire for fun! This course is for all ages from 11 to 60+.
When is it?
The course is three sessions and will run on Friday 12th, 20th, and 26th June, starting at 6:00pm and finishing at 9:00pm each evening. Following this, if you decide you wish to continue paddling with us, you can book straight onto the Improvers course and progress onto the Discover Award which runs for six weeks from Friday 3rd July to Friday 7th August.
What Craft?
You can do these courses in either:
- Kayak – we provide enclosed kayaks that you will learn to use with a spray deck to keep the water out.
- Canoe – we provide open (Canadian) canoes that you paddle as a pair and then solo.
- Sit-on Kayak – if you want to use a Sit-on then please bring one along with you (as the club does not have any).
- SUP - if you want to use a SUP then please bring one along with you (as the club does not have any).
Note: There is a separate Junior Course aimed at young people with a separate information leaflet. If you are 11 to 15 years old, you may prefer the Junior course which runs on Saturday Morning.
The course is typically run for up to 8 people.
Is this course suitable for you?
To do our course on our flowing / wavy waters you will need certain amount of flexibility / mobility (typically we would expect as a guide: an ability to kneel for extended periods, the ability to rotate your torso to the left and right way whist sitting down). Our courses are aimed at progressing from paddling on calm water to then equip you for group paddling on rivers and the sea in a range of conditions.
PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION LEAFLET for all the details of the course.
We will use your personal data for administering your course entry and membership. We share data with WebCollect and statistical data/certificate data with Paddle UK. We will contact you regarding membership, renewal, club events and trips - you can select how you are contacted on the application form.
