An Introduction to White Water Paddling
Have you been wondering what white water paddling is all about? This trip is the perfect opportunity to take your first steps into moving water in a safe, supportive, and enjoyable environment.
The beautiful Lower River Dart provides an ideal venue for developing river skills and building confidence. Throughout the day, our experienced leaders will introduce you to the fundamentals of white water paddling, including:
- Reading the water and identifying river features
- Breaking in and out of the current
- Using edging to control your kayak
- Ferry gliding across the flow
- River awareness and safe decision-making
- Group paddling techniques on moving water
This section of river offers gentle moving water and small features, making it an excellent starting point for anyone interested in joining our winter white water programme.
Who Is This Trip For?
This trip is suitable for paddlers who are comfortable in their kayak and looking to progress from flat water onto moving water.
If you are unsure whether this trip is appropriate for your experience level, please contact Tash or Donna before booking.
Getting There
Help with transport and boat shuttles will be needed.
If you are receiving a lift, please be prepared to contribute towards fuel costs. Spaces may be limited by the number of available drivers and vehicles capable of transporting boats.
What to Bring
Please come prepared for a full day on the water:
- Kayak, paddle and spraydeck
- PFD (buoyancy aid)
- Suitable paddling clothing for the weather conditions
- Waterproof and windproof layers - Club Cag and trousers.
- River footwear or wet shoes
- Dry bag with lunch, drinks and snacks
- Spare dry clothes for after paddling
- Any required medications and emergency contact details
- A towel
- A small amount of cash for refreshments or fuel sharing
Staying Safe as a Group
We will paddle together as a group, so please:
- DO NOT GET ON THE WATER UNTIL INSTRUCTED BY THE LEADER.
- Do not paddle off
- Listen carefully during safety briefings and coaching sessions
- Be prepared to support others if required

BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL. BOOKING WILL CLOSE AT 6PM ON THE FRIDAY BEFORE THE EVENT DATE. AFTER THIS TIME, PADDLERS WITH THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT AND TRANSPORT MAY CONTACT THE ORGANISER DIRECTLY TO ENQUIRE ABOUT ATTENDING.
River levels can change quickly, and alternative plans may occasionally be required. Please check the AVCC website or Facebook page for any updates before travelling.
