BHPA Club Coach Training and Refresher Course
The DHPC is holding a BHPA Club Coach Course on the weekend of 20th & 21st March 2027
These courses are held over a weekend and are aimed at good pilots wishing to help other pilots develop their skills. All existing Coaches are welcome to attend plus any pilots wanting to attain the Club Coach rating.
For existing Club Coaches:
If it’s been a few years since your last Club Coach training, please strongly consider signing up.
The BHPA are starting to tighten-up on the CC certification requirements and recommend existing Coaches to do a refresher course every 5 years. In 2026 they said “no” to a couple of CC renewals where the period was significantly longer. They are also asking me to confirm that existing coaches have been “active” in the coaching role (who wants a rusty coach!). Pilots wanting to become a Club Coach:
The BHPA requires candidates to have the absolute minimum of CP plus 10 hours, plus they must have sound airmanship and demonstrate good safe flying practices.
You don't need to be a sky god to pass on good practice but it is wise to know your limits (i.e. don't coach a skill that you haven't mastered yourself).
If you’re unsure of whether to go for it just give me a call or chat to some of the other long-standing club coaches.
Costs:
£35 per unqualified participant, £25 for a refresher.
The club will reimburse the costs for any DHPC club coaches who are due to do a refresher course. Also, to encourage a few new pilots to obtain the CC rating, we will cover the costs for the first five unqualified members who sign up for it. However, if the club covers the costs, I think it’s fair to expect pilots to actively engage in coaching activities for DHPC, be that helping pilots develop their skills or by giving lectures.

TBC. I have provisionally requested the training room at The London Gliding Club but they cannot commit until the new year.
