Can we set up an automated welcome email when members join?

We don't have an automated email that goes out when people first sign up.  However, you can create and send a Prepared Email.  

On the Members list page, you can filter by "Linked Since" to identify those who have become linked to your organisation recently.  Note:  These will include non-members who have purchased event tickets.

The text is saved for the Prepared Email, so it should be only a 2 minute job to identify the new members, and send the email.
